Purdue Study Abroad Cost: Real Budget Breakdown by Program

Purdue study abroad costs depend on the program type. Exchange students pay regular Purdue tuition, while co-sponsored and departmental programs charge program fees instead. Purdue’s Bursar lists a $500 West Lafayette program deposit. Because the university offers no single price across its 400+ programs, check each program’s own budget before you commit.

Why Purdue Study Abroad Costs Vary So Much

Purdue says its 400+ programs use many different fee structures and billing arrangements. A semester exchange and a department-led summer trip are billed in very different ways, so comparing sticker prices alone can mislead you.

When you meet a study abroad advisor, you receive preliminary budgets for each program. These list the education costs plus estimated out-of-pocket extras, which vary by program. Extras commonly include travel and daily living costs, but Purdue’s program budgets are the place to confirm what applies to you.

Residency also matters. Some program types charge in-state and out-of-state students differently, while others charge everyone the same.

    Budget Breakdown by Program Type

The table below summarizes how each type is billed, based on Purdue’s own cost guidance.

    Program typeWhat you payAid notes
ExchangeRegular Purdue tuition (in-state or out-of-state), plus a charge for required emergency medical coverageAid used on campus will probably apply, and Indiana state scholarships can cover tuition
Co-sponsored and direct enrollProgram fees paid to the outside organization, plus a Purdue study abroad fee instead of tuition, the same for all residency statusesPurdue merit scholarships and federal grants and loans can apply; Indiana state scholarships, staff-dependent remissions and Child of Disabled Veteran benefits cannot
DepartmentalComprehensive program fees charged through PurdueSame restrictions as co-sponsored programs costs and aid +5

    Which type costs less?

Purdue says an exchange is probably the most cost-effective option for in-state students. For out-of-state students, the picture differs: co-sponsored programs usually cost about the same as staying on campus, and sometimes less. For Indiana residents they are usually more expensive than Purdue tuition and fees, with some exceptions.

    Fees Purdue Publishes

Purdue’s Bursar office lists these study abroad charges:

    ChargeAmount
Study abroad program deposit (West Lafayette)$500.00
Study abroad fee, per fall or spring semester$914.10
Study abroad fee, per summer module$304.70 Other Fees — 2026-2027 +5

The 2026–27 page still labels these figures as effective Fall 2025. Confirm current amounts, and which program types each fee applies to, with the Study Abroad Office or the Bursar.

Summer deserves special attention. Most summer opportunities are co-sponsored or departmental, so those aid rules apply. Summer students also need a separate summer aid application through myPurdue.

How Financial Aid and Scholarships Fit In

Students in Purdue-approved programs are eligible for aid through the Division of Financial Aid (DFA). Students not currently receiving aid may be able to get loans, which requires filing the FAFSA. Key points to plan around:

    • Budgets go to DFA on October 15 for spring programs and March 15 for summer, fall and academic-year programs. Your aid package cannot be determined until after those dates.
    • Study abroad advisors refer aid questions to DFA, and Purdue advises against relying on friends’ or past participants’ aid information.
    • 529 plans, private loans and outside scholarships need a case-by-case check with DFA.

On scholarships, Purdue reports more than $10 million awarded in study abroad scholarships over the last five years. It lists Giant Leaps semester and short-term scholarships, plus college-specific and outside options such as the Gilman scholarship.

Final Thoughts: Build Your Budget Before You Commit

Start with program type, since it determines how you are billed and which aid applies. Then request the preliminary budget, check your aid with DFA, and note the October and March deadlines.

Purdue study abroad can cost less than, about the same as, or more than a semester on campus, depending on your residency and the program you pick. The official budgets and a DFA conversation will tell you far more than any general estimate.

    FAQs

How much does Purdue study abroad cost?
There is no single price. Purdue says costs vary across its 400+ programs, and each program page lists its own estimated costs.

Is study abroad cheaper than staying on campus?
It depends on the program and your residency. Purdue says exchange programs are probably the cheapest option for in-state students. For out-of-state students, co-sponsored programs usually cost about the same as campus or less.

Can I use financial aid for study abroad?
Often yes. Purdue-approved programs qualify for aid through the Division of Financial Aid, but some aid types, such as Indiana state scholarships, cannot cover co-sponsored or departmental fees. Confirm with DFA.

Does Purdue offer study abroad scholarships?
Yes. Purdue lists Giant Leaps semester and short-term scholarships, plus college-specific and external funding options.

What is the Purdue study abroad deposit?
Purdue’s Bursar lists a $500 program deposit for West Lafayette. Check the Study Abroad Office for how it is applied and any refund terms, since I found no confirmation of those details.

Not every student has a high GPA, so it also helps to look at scholarship options for applicants with a low GPA and at how other US universities structure aid, such as WGU scholarships.
